This summer term’s Design Studio will be led by Visiting Professor Anna Llonch Sentis from young Barcelona practice Cierto Estudio. The studio will work on the conversion of a former military site in the central Graz district of Jakomini and will provide more than 500 housing units. The studio will collectively design an urban housing project with a variety of typologies that will critically reassess the brief and outcome of a recent competition on this very site. X Rooms will explore innovative housing typologies through Cierto Estudio’s methodology of continuous interaction between plan design and models that will be applied to the full scale spectrum – i.e. from collective production of an urban design to groups of different typologies to individual projects of two students. Teamwork will hence shift in scale and number from a group of 16 to two groups of 8 to 8 teams of 2 and back again, “zooming
in“ into housing units, “zooming out” to urbanism, going back to housing aggregation including collective and access spaces etc., thus creating a constant dialogue between housing plan and urbanism.
